Key facts

The Journalism program at West Virginia University offers students the choice of two tracks: the teaching-research track for those who wish to go pursue a doctoral degree and the professional track for those seeking professional opportunities in mass communications.

You may choose an Area of Emphasis (AOE) in Advocacy and Public Interest Communication, Digital Publishing, Media Solutions and Innovation, Reporting and Writing, Television or Visual Journalism.

Students have the opportunity to work with faculty on research projects and to participate in and help lead web-based, immersion journalism projects, such as 100 Days in Appalachia.

General requirements

To be eligible for admission into a graduate program at WVU an applicant must submit official, bachelors degree transcripts from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75.

To be eligible for admission into the Journalism graduate program an applicant must submit the following documentation:

Résumé /CV
Statement of Purpose
Essay/Writing Sample (Contact a Graduate Program Representative for a Prompt)
Letters of Recommendation - Two
GRE

Additional application considerations:

Applicants to the MSJ program who have two or more years of professional work experience — or at least two professionally oriented internships — or applicants with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or higher are exempt from submitting GRE scores.
Writing sample: 3-5 examples of published work, (academic research papers if not published)
