Overview
The Nursing Practice - BSN to DNP curriculum at The University of Texas at San Antonio emphasizes core leadership courses in public policy advocacy, improving organizational effectiveness, health informatics and financial and business management; and, scientific inquiry based on translational science and evidenced-based practice, population health, and advanced specialty clinical practice. This BSN to DNP program is designed for nurses who already hold a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Upon completion of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program, students will earn:
- Knowledge for Nursing Practice: Lead innovative nursing practice by integrating knowledge and theory from nursing and other diverse interdisciplinary perspectives.
- Person-centered Care: Design, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based, holistic, compassionate, and inclusive healthcare that promotes self-management within patients' developmental and contextual needs.
- Population Health: Advance the health and well-being of populations by improving systems of care, collaborating with stakeholders, and advocating for policy that promotes social justice and health equity.
- Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline: Lead in the synthesis, and application of best evidence into nursing practice to improve health and transform healthcare.
- Quality and Safety: Implement the principles of knowledge translation, evidence-based practice, and quality management to improve systems of care yielding synchronization between best practices, client and clinician safety, and better client outcomes.
- Interprofessional Partnerships: Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare teams and stakeholders to provide patient-centered care, strengthen the healthcare experience, and improve outcomes.
- Systems-Based Practice: Optimize system effectiveness through application of innovation and evidence-based practice for safe, equitable, and cost-effective quality care.
- Informatics and Healthcare Technologies: Optimize the selection, implementation, use, and evaluation of information and communication technologies to enable safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care across all system levels.
- Professionalism: Cultivate a strong professional identity that embodies the core values of the nursing profession, including integrity, accountability, equity, inclusion, and ethical practice.
- Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development: Exemplify personal resilience, well-being, and professional maturity, while exhibiting leadership capabilities that promote the advancement of the nursing profession and the greater social good.

- RN licensure in Texas or compact state license
- 3.0 minimum GPA from last 60 hours of college coursework
- Three professional references
- $45 School of Nursing Application Fee (non-refundable)
- A completed NursingCAS application

- Please be advised that the Doctor of Nursing Practice: BSN to DNP applicants will be required to complete an embedded online interview as part of the application process within Nursing CAS (Centralized Application Service for Nursing Programs).
- A minimum of 1 year (2,000 hours) of Registered Nurse (RN) experience in a clinical setting is required and should be documented on your resume. Please upload your resume to your NursingCAS application
