Overview
Overview
The Teaching - Special Education program at Henderson State University is a 36-hour degree emphasizing pedagogy, methodology, classroom management, human growth and development and needs of exceptional children.
The program is designed and developed to allow a candidate with a bachelor's degree or higher an alternative route to teacher licensure in special education, elementary education, middle level, or secondary education. The field-based program focuses on areas exhibited in the four domains of Charlotte Danielson's Framework for Teaching.
The candidate is employed as a Teacher of Record with a provisional license or placed in an internship while completing class work and requirements necessary for a standard Arkansas teaching license.
As a teacher of record, you will have a full time job. Because of this, we have structured the program to fit your schedule. Classes are taught in the evening, online, and on Saturdays.
The MAT degree includes a curriculum focusing on the following areas of instruction:
- Basic principles of teaching
- Developmental growth and learning stages for birth-5 years, elementary, middle, and secondary students
- Methods and procedures necessary for effective teaching
- Unique needs of children with exceptionalities
