About Playwriting at The University of Iowa
The Department of Theatre Arts offers academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students. It also stages live performances throughout the academic year and during the summer. The department also administers the Certificate in Public Digital Arts and the Certificate in Social Justice and the Performing Arts.
The department is one of the academic units in the Division of Performing Arts. Students have the opportunity to earn a major in theatre arts and a second major in one of the other units within the division—dance or music.

General requirements
- A U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
- A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Admissions.
- English Proficiency Requirements
- You must first submit the online application to the Graduate College and pay the $60 application fee by credit card ($100 for international applicants).
- Two scripts: scripts should be full-length. One of the scripts may be either a long one-act or a screenplay, as long as the other script is a full-length play.
- A résumé of relevant academic, theatrical, and work experience
- A short personal statement detailing your personal, academic, and theatrical background, including your reasons for pursuing graduate study in playwriting and your professional goals.
