Overview
With a focus on hands-on experience, the Civil Engineering degree from Georgia Southern University will equip you with industry-ready skills coupled with innovative and cutting-edge research knowledge within your individual field of interest. Taught by a faculty consisting mostly of professional engineers, you’ll get the training you need to hit the ground running.
Choose a Thesis (research) or Non-Thesis (project) Track from Five Areas:
Construction EngineeringAs a construction engineer, you’ll learn advanced analysis and design, project planning, scheduling and management of large-scale construction projects. You’ll gain the skills to be an invaluable player in the construction of residential, commercial, and heavy civil projects such as roadways, bridges, ports, and more.
Environmental/Water Resources EngineeringAs an environmental/water resources engineer, you’re working with our most precious resource for life on earth. You’ll solve current, relevant, real-world problems that affect water quality and sustainability. Learn about drinking water and wastewater treatment, surface water management, watershed management, and more.
Transportation-Pavement/Geotechnical EngineeringIn this track, you’ll examine the characteristics of soil, rock and asphalt materials as well as the design and construction of pavement, foundation and other earth structures. You’ll have the opportunity to research green and sustainable pavement materials, geotechnical load and resistance factor design (LRFD), ground improvement, and traffic safety simulation.
Structural EngineeringAs a structural engineer, you’ll analyze and design large-scale infrastructure. Study resistance factor design (LRFD) of reinforced concrete and steel structures, and repair and rehabilitation of civilian infrastructure. You’ll also explore emerging technologies such as fiber-reinforced polymeric structures and forensic analysis tools such as non-destructive testing.
Surveying-GeomaticsLearn to navigate the geospatial world by using large geographical information systems, LiDAR, enhanced photogrammetry, advanced global positioning systems and other emerging technologies. This track prepares you for cutting edge surveying and geomatics and delivers the necessary coursework required for Professional Surveying Licensure in the State of Georgia.
