Overview
Students at Salem State University may select one of two specialty areas: Mental Health Counseling (MHC) or School Adjustment Counseling (SAC). Both specialties aim to provide a broad, research-based understanding of human functioning; promote the development of skills and behaviors essential for ethical and effective clinical work in diverse settings with diverse populations; and facilitate reflective practice and professional development.
The Counseling curriculum is aligned with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensure requirements. Both concentrations include an applied practicum/internship supervised by seasoned on-site clinical supervisors in mental health agencies.
Program highlights include:
Flexible pacing options: Full-time students can complete this program within two years; part-time students can complete anywhere from three to six years, depending on the number of courses taken per semester
Predictable scheduling: Courses taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
Hands-on experiential learning: Students will complete, at a minimum, a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship, applied clinical training
Licensure opportunities: Core curriculum aligned with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensure requirements for becoming mental health and school adjustment counselors
World-class faculty: Faculty have years of professional experience and research specializations in a wide range of areas, including multicultural counseling competencies, culture and mental health, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), LGBT well-being, social justice, trauma, and the impact of racial discrimination

- Official copy of scores from either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) taken within the last five years. Those who already hold a master's degree or higher are exempt from this requirement.

18 credit hours of study in the field of psychology and/or the behavioral sciences, including:
- 3 credit hours in general psychology or the equivalent
- 3 credit hours in statistics or research or the equivalent
