This program answers the growing need for more understanding and better preparation for those working with students with severe disabilities. It is designed for experienced teachers and para-professionals, to enhance their working knowledge of the field. It also provides for exploration of new opportunities afforded with this knowledge.

This is not a licensure program and does not lead to BACB certification.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of autism, behavioral issues and severe special needs


This program will enhance the skills and understanding of:

  • Experienced special educators  wanting more information to better serve the needs of this growing population.
  • General educators who wish to work more effectively in their inclusion classes.
  • Para-professionals currently working with students with severe disabilities, to gain a better understanding of the autistic needs and behavioral issues of the students they serve.

                English Language Requirements

                  The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.                 Academic Requirements

                You need the following GPA score:

                Required score: 3

                Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

                Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

                General Requirements

                • Official transcript - Official transcripts of your completed bachelor's degree along with any transcripts of other degrees held from accredited institutions of higher education must be submitted.
                • Current Résumé
                • Personal Statement - Write a two-page, typed, double-spaced essay (500 words) describing your professional experience, your goals and objectives for graduate study and for educator licensure.
                • Two Professional Recommendations
                • International students are accepted at Massachusetts location only, and need to provide supplemental documentation:
                • Official demonstration of English language proficiency
                • Supplemental documentation for issuance of I-20
                • International transcripts, evaluated by an accepted evaluation service
