Overview
UCM offers one of very few ABET-accredited MS programs in occupational safety and health management in the country, so your master’s degree will get employers to take notice. Our focus on hands-on experience means you’ll be ready to move into a leadership role in the workforce after graduation. You’ll roll up your sleeves in a graduate lab course and out in the field using the most current technology. Participate in premier conferences and test your safety science skills in applied projects as you earn your Safety master’s degree from UCM.
Our small classroom sizes range from just 10 to 25 graduate students, so you get the personal attention you deserve as you hone your skills and advance toward your individual goals.
Program Learning Outcomes
The graduate with a Master of Science degree in Occupational Safety Management from the University of Central Missouri will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the programs to:
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate professionally verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrate knowledge of professional integrity and ethical standards.
- Recognize the importance of contemporary, global and societal issues as they relate to the practice of occupational safety and health.
- Develop, coordinate and/or participate on multidisciplinary teams to protect people, property and the environment.
- Recognize the importance of life-long learning for the purpose of enhancing discipline specific technical competencies.
- Analyze injury, illness and liability trends to help establish priority direction.
- Organize limited resources for optimum risk control.
- Develop, implement and evaluate hazard control processes for a performance safety program.

General requirements
Possession of a bachelor’s degree from a Regionally Accredited University with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Additional requirements by Area are as follows (only need to meet the requirements of the Area applying for and admitted into):
- Professional Certification Area – Admission into this Area requires current possession of any of the following designations or certifications in good standing: Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- Work Experience Area – A minimum of 1 year of full time work experience with at least 50% job duties related to safety.
- Foundation Area – One semester of each of the following subjects with a grade of C or better: chemistry, physics, college algebra or higher-level math, and statistics. Students must complete SAFE 5100** (taken before or concurrently with SAFE 5140).
