About

The mission of the master's program in Molecular Biosciences program at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is to develop outstanding research scientists capable of understanding the basic mechanisms of human health and disease.

Overview

It is this knowledge that is often the first step in developing therapies to diagnose or reduce the threats posed by conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and infectious diseases.Mirroring a Ph.D. program, the Master’s in Molecular Biosciences at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is built around a thesis project led by the student and supported by their faculty research mentor.

Thesis Molecular Biosciences research begins in the first year, continues through the summer, and culminates with a thesis presentation and defense at the end of the second year.

Learning outcomes

Past thesis projects have explored subjects such as treatments for low levels of HDL cholestrol, the role of Vitamin D in glucose control, and the use of estrogen in treating septic patients. The program is interdisciplinary, bringing together basic, applied, and clinical scientists from a number of departments to provide each student with an individualized, cutting-edge biomedical education.

This work is supported through courses in the core biomedical disciplines and further complemented with instruction in subjects such as laboratory research techniques and the ethical conduct of science.
