Overview
The MA in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6, pre-service) at the Adelphi University is an initial program for students who do not currently hold certification in elementary (childhood) education.
Quick Facts:
- Qualified candidates certified in areas other than elementary education may enroll in this program to earn a second teaching certificate and fulfill the graduate degree requirement for professional (permanent) certification in both areas.
- Students begin their studies with a thorough examination of the foundations of childhood education, learning about how children develop intellectually, socially and emotionally. The foundation courses also expose students to the dynamics of school reform today and its impact on local schools; how and why assessments are used as well as various theories of teaching practices.
- From here, students undertake the field-based methods courses. These courses, some offered in local elementary schools, show you how to teach elementary students in the areas of ELA (English Language Arts), Math, Science and the Social Studies. You will gain both greater knowledge of the content in each discipline while practicing practical ways to teach these subjects.
Why Should I Enroll?
- Excellent partnerships with local school districts that provide rigorous preparation.
- Convenient evening classes for working professionals
- Dedicated faculty with small, personalized classes
- Full-time students can complete the program in three semesters; flexible part-time options are also available
