The research in earth system science is focused on understanding atmospheric, hydrological, ecological, and earth surface processes to improve our understanding of Earth as an integrated system and our ability to address environmental challenges. The Department work at multiple spatial and temporal scales and in a number of regions around the world.

Overview

The Department of Geography is committed to the discovery, application, and dissemination of knowledge concerning the environment and society in order to help our students become global citizens, environmental stewards, policy makers, and scientists, and to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Alabama by helping better understand human impacts on the environment and interactions between society and Earth’s natural systems.

  • Applicant data sheet and statement of purpose
  • One transcript for each U.S. or international institution of higher education
  • Admissions test scores less than five years old 
  • The application fee is $65 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and $80 for international applicants
  • Three letters of recommendation. 
  • Additional application materials (e.g., portfolios, writing samples, responses to essay questions, etc.) required by individual departments
  • International applicants must submit one certified copy in the native language along with certified precise word-for-word English translations of all transcripts, diplomas, and certificates of degree.
