Overview
Composers are responsible for creating some of the most popular works of art in history: the trademark arias of renowned opera singers, catchy jingles from popular commercials and Oscar-winning songs scores to blockbuster films, among others.
Through the Music: Composition program offered at the University of Oklahoma, students develop a personal voice in composition as they prepare for a professional career in music composition, music theory or for advanced academic study.
Students in the program develop a working knowledge of composition techniques, including those related to technological innovations in the field, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), electronic music, orchestration, notation, experimental music and conducting.
Throughout their course of study, students have access to School of Music ensembles and instrumental and vocal students who regularly perform student compositions and offer reading sessions. Composition students also benefit from the university's leadership in music technology. They have access to a comprehensive collection of computers and electronic music equipment, including a state-of-the-art digital recording studio. Through the program, students develop a personal voice in composition as they prepare for a professional career in music composition, music theory or for advanced academic study.
In addition to general university admission requirements, Composition students must pass an instrumental audition before enrolling in the College of Fine Arts.

Composition students typically have interests in music performance, theory and technique, along with songwriting, musical movements and history. High school preparation should include training in instrumental technique, sightreading and performance experience.
