The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the East Tennessee State University is proud to offer three programs for individuals interested in pursuing a graduate degree in the field. 


We offer a master degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology at the East Tennessee State University. The on-campus M.A. is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of crime, its causes, and the operations of the criminal justice system. 

Key Features 

  • Courses are offered on our main campus in Johnson City, typically during evening hours. 
  • The online M.A. is structured after the on-campus version, but designed to provide practitioners and those interested in entering the field with applied coursework and the ability to complete all requirements via distance learning.

Programme Structure

  • Completion of General Education Core Requirements of the university and requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences B.A. or B.S. in social and behavioral sciences.
  • Completion of criminal justice and criminology core curriculum.
  • Completion of 21 hours of elective courses.
  • Completion of a minor to be selected in consultation with the director of advising in the department.

  • 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative
  • A statement about why you wish to pursue this degree.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice or a related field form an accredited college or university
  • A 3-5 page (double-spaced) personal statement discussing the applicant’s academic/career experiences, motivation for pursuing a graduate degree, and how the degree will aid in achieving their professional goals
