Appalachian Studies from East Tennessee State University is the only degree of its kind in the state of Tennessee and the second such degree in the Appalachian region.


Appalachian Studies from East Tennessee State University with its strong history of service to Appalachia and a mission that embraces its Southern Appalachian identity and setting. Faculty in the Department of Appalachian Studies are widely recognized as leaders in Appalachian-related research and community outreach.

  • The personal essay (required by the School of Graduate Studies) should address the student’s reasons for choosing an Appalachian Studies program;
  • Acceptable GPA (3.0 on a 4.0 scale preferred);
  • Three letters of recommendation; and
  • A writing sample, such as a paper previously submitted for credit in an undergraduate or graduate course.
  • Unofficial transcripts may be submitted with your application. Official transcripts will be required upon acceptance to a Graduate program.
  • A statement about why you wish to pursue this degree.
