The Master of Arts for Appalachian Studies from the East Tennessee State University is the only degree of its kind in the state of Tennessee and the second such degree in the Appalachian region.


This Appalachian Studies degree is a natural fit for East Tennessee State University, with its strong history of service to Appalachia and a mission that embraces its Southern Appalachian identity and setting.

  • The personal essay (required by the School of Graduate Studies) should address the student's reasons for choosing an Appalachian studies program;
  • Acceptable GPA (3.0 on a 4.0 scale preferred);
  • GRE scores (students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Appalachian Studies may be admitted without the GRE scores);
  • Three letters of recommendation;
  • A writing sample, such as a paper previously submitted for credit in an undergraduate or graduate course.
