Overview
All students enrolled in the Plant Biology program of the University of Massachusetts Amherst are required to perform independent research and prepare a thesis. The PB Program does not offer a non-thesis option, except for the Fifth Year Master's Program open only to Five College undergraduates.
Typical M.S. Schedule
First Semester
- Plant Biology core survey course (PB I)
- One or two PB program-related courses
- PB seminars and discussions
- Thesis Advisor selected and approved by end of semester
Second Semester
- Thesis Committee assembled and approved as early in semester as possible
- Plant Biology core proposal writing course – optional (PB II)
- One or two PB program-related courses
- Journal club
- PB seminars and discussions
Third Semester
- Beginning of semester, Thesis Outline approved and submitted to Graduate School (no later than 4 months prior to defending)
- One or two elective courses
- Journal club
- PB seminars and discussions
Fourth Semester
- Journal club
- PB seminars and discussions
- Defense of Thesis Examination
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Completion of at least three 600-level Plant Biology program-related courses (see course listings for the PhD)
- Six (minimum) to ten (maximum) credits of Master's Thesis (BIOLOGY 699)
- Four or more credits from PB journal clubs (1-2 cr. per semester - see pg. 3) PLSOIL 791A (Seminar Preparation and Presentation) can be taken one semester in lieu of a journal club.
- Four credits from Plant Biology seminars and discussions (1 credit per semester - see pg. 3)
- The remaining graduate credits are elective.

- Applicants must submit the standard Application form for Graduate School, available online.
- Official transcripts
- Two letters of reference must be provided
- Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores is not required
- Students whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL scores
- The "Personal Statement" as requested on the University of Massachusetts application form should include a brief narrative that addresses work experience, research experience, and scholarship.
- Applicants should include reprints of papers published in refereed science journals and/or abstracts from papers presented at meetings (only if they are written in English). Do not including any extraneous information such as photocopies of diplomas, certificates of award, etc.
