Models based instruction along with research-based pedagogy form the basis of the HPE Masters in Education Degree. Teachers who have initial certification learn advanced teaching techniques as well as leadership and supervision skills as they complete the program and earn a T-5 teaching certificate. Students without initial certification are able to complete their teaching certification in the program with the addition of undergraduate content classes.


Recognizing that physical activity is vital for all people, the Department of Kinesiology and Health at Georgia State University seeks to:

  • discover new knowledge and advance the understanding of the role of physical activity in attaining optimal health and well-being,
  • educate members of society and prepare future professionals, and
  • promote healthy lifestyles through life-long activity and learning.
The Master of Education in Health and Physical Education is designed forP-12 health and physical educators who wish to:
  • Extend their content and pedagogical knowledge for improved professional practice.
  • Develop leadership skills that will allow them to lead curriculum development, program administration, and leadership roles at the local school level, and in professional organizations at the state, regional, and national levels.

Students interested in careers in public school teaching should refer to the programs in health and physical education. If you are interested in a career in fitness, wellness or cardiac rehabilitation refer to the programs in exercise science. Students interested in a career in the sports industry, should refer to the sports administration program.

Students interested in advanced preparation in athletic training should review the program in sports medicine. Graduate students who already hold a master’s degree or equivalent and are interested in careers in teaching and research in sport science should refer to the doctoral program.
