Basic Degree Information/Description
The focus of the program is research in architecture; areas of research include historic preservation, architectural history, sustainability in architecture, and international community planning and design.
The Architecture program of The University of Texas at San Antonio stresses critical writing and research methods. The program takes advantage of its location in downtown San Antonio and a rich heritage of historic architecture and urbanism.

The College of Architecture, Construction and Planning’s location in downtown San Antonio, composed of several historic layers form the 17th century to the present, makes our programs the perfect laboratory for the in-depth exploration of creativity, professions, and research.
The Master of Science in Architecture (M.S. ARCH) program stresses critical writing and research methods, which prepare students for careers in research, teaching, consulting, and further graduate study. The program is also enhanced by the college’s location in Downtown San Antonio, which has a rich heritage of historic architecture and urbanism.
The M.S. ARCH program has four major research focus areas:
- Urban and Regional Planning: Provides students with an introductory understanding of the historical, social, international, and physical context of comprehensive land use planning and sustainable urbanism.
- Sustainable Architecture: Research in sustainable architecture provides students with an understanding of both the theoretical and applied sides of sustainable design with a particular emphasis on environmental sustainability. Research areas include the history and theory of sustainable design, methods and tools of sustainable design, and high performance buildings and communities.
- Architectural History: Graduate study in architectural history provides students with essential training in the perceptual, historical, and critical analysis of architecture and cities. This specialization prepares students to pursue career opportunities in architectural history in academic and institutional settings, as well as for post-graduate degree or to pursue careers in education, law, historic preservation, urban planning, and publishing.
- Historic Preservation: Historic preservation is a process of design for continuity and management of change within an existing historic context. Historic preservation offers specialized education in historic preservation design, technology, planning and management through graduate-level courses.

- A completed a Graduate School application
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America
- Two letters of recommendation
- Letter of Intent that clearly and succinctly outlines the applicant’s goals for graduate study
- General GRE, not older than five years
- English language proficiency scores
- Samples of expository writing and/or portfolio for non-thesis option
