The University of Chester has been making history since 1839, when it was founded by such pioneers as the great 19th-century prime ministers, William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby, and a former Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1842, Gladstone opened the College's original buildings for its first intake of 10 male student teachers on the Parkgate Road site, just outside the City Walls.


Our academic departments are grouped into seven distinct faculties, along with a Graduate School and faculty-based research centres, for those wishing to gain a qualification by research.

Housing services

For many, starting university means living away from home for the first time. That’s why our helpful accommodation team are here to help you every step of the way.  

Our accommodation is conveniently located for getting the most out of your student life at the University of Chester. Most University-owned and partnership accommodation is located either on or very close to our Parkgate Road Campus (Chester) or Warrington Campus.

We offer a range of accommodation types, from self-catered through to full board, and in different styles, from small self-contained houses, to large, traditional halls of residence.

Library services

  • The University of Chester has nine libraries across its different campuses and all staff and students of the University are welcome to use any of the libraries.
  • In addition to books, journals and other resources, all libraries have computers, study areas and bookable study rooms. Subject-specialist staff are available at all sites to support learning.

ICT services

Our on-campus facilities include a Learning Resource Centre, modern lecture theatres, open-access computer facilities, state-of-the-art science/skills/language laboratories, a range of catering outlets, the £2 million Chester Students’ Union centre and CSU bar/club, bookshop, chapel and faith space, cashpoint and launderette.

Medical services

  • All students who don’t already live locally are advised to register with a local GP and Dental Practice to ensure that they have health support whilst living away from home, should it be required. 
  • There are a number of GP Practices and Dentists within close proximity to the University, and you can find the one most convenient to where you will be living .

Campus life

  • Our historic Parkgate Road Campus in Chester has offered a wide range of courses since opening in 1839. It’s situated only a short walk from the lively city centre, and provides a friendly, secure and supportive environment in which to live and study.
  • Creative Campus, Kingsway is located on the outskirts of the city centre, a 20-minute walk from Parkgate Road Campus. Across 6,920 square metres this specially developed creative arts campus offers a range of modern facilities and equipment to bring learning to life.
  • The Riverside Campus provides specialist teaching facilities for most students in the Chester-based Faculties of Education and Children’s Services, and Health and Social Care. 

Sports facilities

  • Students at our Chester campuses can enjoy a variety of facilities at Parkgate Road and Thornton Science Park.
  • The Fitness Suite is staffed by friendly, approachable and qualified fitness instructors on hand to provide you with as much support and guidance as you need.
  • A popular sport facility; our floodlit MUGA pitch provides a fantastic surface to play a wide range of sports on, including football, rugby and American football.

My overall study experience has been very challenging and has helped me develop several skills required in the future. The lecturers are realistic and have been very supportive. I love that Chester is a small town where international students are able to fit in very easily as the community is so welcoming along with the University too.
