SLU is a young university with a long history. It was founded in 1977 out of the agricultural, forestry and veterinary university colleges, the Veterinary School at Skara and the Forestry School at Skinnskatteberg.

The programmes offered by SLU are unique and based on our strength and profile areas, a bio-based economy and environment, health and life quality. The combination of teaching and research provide students with countless opportunities for interesting, in-depth studies and specialisations.
Research and doctoral education stand for 70 per cent of SLU's turnover. Sound basic research is combined with more practical studies to solve concrete problems. The researchers often work interdisciplinarily.
SLU researchers contribute to around 1.600 scientific articles every year and SLU's publications belong to the most cited in their scientific fields. The university achieves very high standards in international comparisons. SLU's broad infrastructure is available for researchers at other universities or companies.

SLU is mainly located at Uppsala, Alnarp, Umea and Skara. Education, research activities and environmental monitoring and assessment are carried out throughout the country.
At the Alnarp campus, the main activities concern landscape architecture, horticulture, plant production, agriculture and silviculture in Southern Sweden. Two of SLU's faculties are represented, and also several connected organisations.
The SLU University Library works with, and contributes to developing, scientific communication. The library also supports researchers, students and employees in order to strengthen the quality of SLU's research and education. Visit us in Umeå, Uppsala, Skinnskatteberg or Alnarp.
Everyone who is a student or employee at SLU can use our VPN function for making a safe connection between a computer outside SLU and the SLU network. To make it work you must have a user account in the Active Directory at SLU.
The Student Health Centre operates as a health service for all SLU students, and works predominantly with study-related healthcare, medical advice, and crisis assistance. The Student Health Centre works in connection to the district Healthcare Centre, which provides general medical care.
SLU’s campuses and research facilities are spread throughout Sweden, with three main campuses located in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala. Though each campus differs in size and structure, they all have a warm, friendly and inspiring atmosphere. SLU currently has over 4000 students and 700 research students enrolled and conducts a range of teaching and research activities throughout the country.
Like all students in Sweden, those at SLU have the opportunity to become a member of a student union. At SLU there are eight different student unions, and students can join one union depending on the programme they are enrolled in.
