Northern Michigan University

Northern Michigan University, located in Marquette, Michigan, is a dynamic four-year, public, comprehensive university that has grown its reputation based on its award-winning leadership programs, cutting-edge technology initiatives and nationally recognized academic programs.

When it first opened its doors in 1899 as Northern State Normal School, 32 students were greeted by a faculty of six on a 22-acre campus.

As enrollment swelled in the '50s and '60s, this small teacher's college became a diversified institution with dramatic growth in faculty and facilities.

NMU is rated as an exemplary teacher preparation institution by the Michigan Department of Education and has one of the highest pass rates on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification.

The Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment (IRPA) office works to help support the mission and strategic plans of the University. IRPA is designed to help build a systematic, clear and documented process to help measure institution wide performance.

  • Our graduates are highly regarded by employers and have a high placement rate, even in regions with limited job opportunities.
  • The Academic and Career Advisement Center (ACAC) is responsible for new student orientation sessions, first year student advising, academic proficiency, all-campus tutoring and the freshman probation program. Advisers in ACAC can help any NMU student with choosing the best academic path for success and navigating options to be successful after graduation.
