The Master of Science (MS) Degree in Psychology at Northern Michigan University provides advanced education in psychology and prepares students for doctoral programs in experimental psychology, clinical psychology or closely related fields such as neuroscience, cognitive science, and behavior analysis. This program provides:
- intensive student-initiated research experience in a variety of areas of psychological science
- statistical and methodological training required to examine basic or applied topics in psychological science
- background in psychological history and theory across subdisciplines of psychological science.
In addition to coursework, students complete a capstone project, consisting of either a comprehensive written work on a topic in psychological science or a fully designed and implement experimental master's thesis. For students pursuing the thesis option, additional information on the thesis process is provided below.

General requirements
- Comply with the regular admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies and Research, which includes an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0,
- have a bachelor's degree, preferably in psychology, or an appropriate equivalent, and
- has completed a course in Introductory Psychology and a course in Statistics.
- Candidates with other majors will be considered but may be required to complete certain undergraduate course work in psychology prior to being advanced to candidacy for the MS degree.
- Graduate admission application and fee.
- Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions.
- A personal statement outlining their interest in the program, expectations for the program, and career goals.
- A curriculum vitae.
- Two letters of reference from individuals who know the candidate personally.
- Optional – GRE test scores for general and psychology
