All new teaching assistants also take a Teaching Practicum to ready you for teaching responsibilities your first semester

During your first Creative Writing semester at Northern Michigan University, many of you will take EN 509: Teaching Practicum and some of you will be teaching for the first time. We’d also recommend taking a workshop in the first semester, or at least the first year. Your time and attention will be pulled in many directions–teaching, possibly settling into a new community, acclimating to the language and power structures of academia–and it’s easy to lose track of what likely brought you here in the first place as you manage your day-to-days.

Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions.

MA/MFA English Graduate Program Application Form (writeable PDF).

A resume or CV.

A statement of professional purpose describing their interest in the program (and if applying for a teaching assistantship, their preparedness for teaching).

A critical paper.

A writing portfolio (see below).

Three letters of recommendation that speak to their academic abilities (and if applying for a teaching assistantship speaking to their potential as a teacher).

Admission to the program is highly competitive and is determined primarily by the quality and promise of the applicant’s writing. All applicants must submit a writing portfolio in the genre in which they apply.
