History
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, briefly referred to as KIT, was established by the merger of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH and the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) on October 01, 2009. KIT combines the tasks of a university of the state of Baden-Württemberg with those of a research center of the Helmholtz Association in the areas of research, teaching, and innovation.
Education
Engineering sciences, natural sciences, the humanities, and social sciences make up the scope of subjects covered by KIT. In high interdisciplinary interaction, scientists of these disciplines study topics extending from the fundamentals to application and from the development of new technologies to the reflection of the relationship between man and technology.
For this to be accomplished in the best possible way, KIT’s research covers the complete range from fundamental research to close-to-industry, applied research and from small research partnerships to long-term large-scale research projects. Scientific sincerity and the striving for excellence are the basic principles of our activities.
Research
KIT research will primarily be based on the capacities and knowledge of the scientists, who are members of the over 140 Institutes of KIT. They are supported by an excellent and worldwide unique scientific infrastructure.
In KIT these scientists work in fields of competence depending on their expert know-how. Related fields of competence are bundled in areas of competence. Fields of Competence and Areas of Competence make up the Competence Portfolio of KIT.
Eight KIT Centers pool the program-oriented and coordinated research activities at the KIT, represent KIT’s strategic areas of research to the public, and act as communication and strategy platforms for partners within and outside of KIT.
Career
KIT offers vocational training in more than 30 commercial, technical, and scientific professions.
Every year, about 160 young trainees start their vocational training at KIT after qualified graduation at a secondary general school, intermediate school, or grammar school. They are super-vised by about 200 full-time and part-time trainers. Apart from classical vocational training, KIT offers bachelor programs in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State Universities. Theoretical training phases at a Cooperative State University alternate with practical training phases at KIT.
