Overview
The MS program is designed to meet the goals of three types of students: 1) students who have recently earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field and want to explore a specific type of journalism in greater depth, 2) mid-career journalists who want to expand their professional skills in multimedia, investigative, narrative or immersion journalism, and 3) students who either hold or are pursuing a terminal degree in selected fields (including but not limited to science, technology, engineering and math) seeking to complement their expertise with journalistic skills for communicating it to the public.
Key Features
- The faculty are internationally esteemed practitioners and scholars who offer instruction in a wide range of media and skills in investigative and immersion journalism, news design, science writing, social media, ethics and data analysis and visualization.
- Students in the Journalism program from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign also have the opportunity to take courses in world-renowned colleges on campus, including information science and computer science. The Department also offers dual master degree programs with the Illinois College of Law and the Gies College of Business.

General requirements
- Official transcripts from all universities you have attended, a statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation are required. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for applicants whose undergraduate degree is in a field other than journalism.
- International applicants should consult https://grad.illinois.edu/admissions/countries for minimum requirements for admission, including information about comparable bachelor's degrees.
- Applicants whose native language is not English must present their official scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination as part of their applications. The department follows the Graduate College’s recommendations for English proficiency.
