  • Application Deadline
  • 24 months
University rank #837 (BCR) , CA,
The program offers advanced study of general anthropology, while simultaneously encouraging specialization in one (or more) of the anthropological subdisciplines: archaeology; cultural anthropology; anthropological linguistics; and evolutionary anthropology.

Students may pursue three different specializations in the Anthropology M.A. degree program: Archaeology; Cultural Anthropology; and Evolutionary Anthropology (though these specializations do not appear on the transcript or the diploma). The program provides excellent preparation for Ph.D. work by offering advanced statistical and methodological courses and research experience. The graduate education also prepares students for a variety of careers outside of academia, including in corporations, all levels of government and non-profit organizations. Students who are committed to the field of anthropology, but are undecided on a specialty, have an opportunity to explore options.

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

The Department of Anthropology requires a grade-point average of 3.0 in all undergraduate coursework in anthropology. Students with limited subject or grade deficiencies may be considered for admission to the program if they agree to complete, with at least a “B” (3.0) average, additional courses selected by the Graduate Study Committee. Subject deficiencies must be met prior to candidacy. In addition, they are required to take the graduate record exam (GRE) during the year prior to applying to the program. Students entering the M.A. program from other fields or other departments of anthropology should discuss appropriate course substitution with the graduate adviser.
