The Master of Arts in Science Writing is a flexible, part-time program of online classes and face-to-face residencies, infused with the prestige, quality, and value of Johns Hopkins University.


Students in the Science Writing Program at Johns Hopkins University do not focus on creating scientific research reports, journal articles for peer review, or other scholarly/academic constructs, nor do we concentrate on technical writing for instruction manuals or complicated texts. Our curriculum also isn’t designed for those who need help with English as a Second Language. Our Science 

Writing students aim to translate the complicated information and trends of science, medicine and technology into meaningful, perceptive prose, and media that serve a vital public purpose.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

General requirements

  • Complete the Online Application
  • Upload the following required materials to the Online Application: Statement of Purpose, Resume, Recent writing samples demonstrating the applicant’s promise and current development as a journalist, creative writer, or communications writer.
  • Submit the application and pay the $75 fee when you have uploaded all necessary materials 
  • Upload unofficial copies of transcripts to the application. 
  • Mail in official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate coursework completed within the US only.
  • If you have international coursework, send in the course-by-course credential evaluation. 
  • If English is your second language, you may be required to take the TOEFL or IELTS examination.
