About the Program
We have three major emphasis areas: nutritional biochemistry and physiology, community nutrition, and dietetics.
Scientists working in nutritional biochemistry and physiology conduct their research using the tools of molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and physiology to understand how organisms utilize nutrients to maintain optimal health.
Applied nutritionists use sociological, psychological, anthropological methods, clinical, and education theory to investigate factors that influence the nutritional status of individuals and communities.
The Nutritional Sciences program of Rutgers University draws its faculty from the Departments of Nutritional Sciences, Animal Sciences, Food Sciences, and Human Ecology at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers University, other divisions of Rutgers University, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. Students also benefit from the courses offered and broad research expertise of faculty in related departments in other divisions of Rutgers University and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.

- General chemistry with lab (1 year recommended)
- 1 year organic chemistry or 1 semester organic chemistry plus 1 semester of biochemistry
- At least 12 additional credits in advanced (300-400 level) sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, nutrition, or food science)
- GRE: 304 or above (minimum verbal 153; minimum quantitative 151)
- TOEFL (if English is a second language): 560 or above (paper-based test); 220 or above (computer-based test); 83 or above (internet-based test; minimum individual test scores: writing 22, speaking 23, reading 21, listening 17)
- GPA: B average or above
- Three letters of recommendation
- Master-Dietetics option has addition admission requirements.
