The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences program at The City University of New York is designed for individuals seeking careers as environmental and/or occupational health professionals. 

Overview

This Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences degree prepares students at The City University of New York to assess and measure exposures to environmental and occupational hazards and to develop control strategies to remediate these exposures. It offers courses that develop the scientific framework and technical skills needed to achieve these objectives. Its graduates work as inspectors, health and safety specialists and industrial hygienists for government agencies, institutions, consulting firms and businesses. 

Learning outcomes

The M.S. in industrial hygiene is an ABET accredited program funded through the NIOSH ERCs. Students admitted into the M.S. degree program are eligible for at least 24 credits of tuition reimbursement. Admission criteria for the M.S. degree include a baccalaureate degree in a science or engineering, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0., and a minimum GRE score of 150 for quantitative and verbal reasoning.  

Considerations will be given to promising applicants that our currently working in the field. All applicants must have completed at least 40 credit hours in the following courses: biology, chemistry, health sciences, mathematics, statistics, physics, or engineering prior to admission.

  • Completed SOPHAS application
  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited university with GPA (overall and major) of at least 3.0 preferred.
  • Personal statement/statement of purpose (recommended length is 500 words)
  • Background in the field: paid or volunteer experience in public health or related field
  • Resume
  • 2 Letters of recommendation
  • TOEFL scores are required if language of instruction for prior degrees was not English
  • Transcript evaluation from WES or ECE for foreign transcripts. Please reach out to us if you are having programs with your evaluation due to COVID-19.
  • GRE or MCAT scores. Click here for information on how to submit scores. Please use the CUNY SPH SOPHAS code 7914.
  • Applicants with a 3.0 GPA or above may waive the standardized test requirement.
  • At least 18 credits of college-level science and math, including a course in statistics or calculus. Some chemistry and biology strongly recommended.
