The Department of Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University is one of the oldest Criminal Justice programs in the nation. It is the largest academic department in the College of Arts and Sciences with over 900 Bachelor of Criminal Justice students and 100 Master of Criminal Justice students.

Overview

The mission of the Department of Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University is based upon our understanding of Criminal Justice as an interdisciplinary social science field. 

Program goals

The goals are to prepare students for careers at the federal, state, and local levels throughout the criminal justice profession and to deliver the highest quality education to our undergraduate and graduate students, helping them develop critical thinking skills, knowledge in theoretical perspectives and methodological techniques, and providing experiential learning opportunities giving students first hand exposure to the complexities of the professional environment.

Faculty members of the Department of Criminal Justice care deeply about our students, and the awards we have received attest to this caring attitude. A goal of the faculty is to extend their knowledge and skills to agencies and groups across the State and within the Community in an effort to be proactive in the prevention of crime and to assist in developing cutting edge best practices.

GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.
GMAT admission requirements GMAT The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.

PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.

  • Graduate School does not require transcript evaluations as part of the application process but reserve’s the right to request an evaluation should there be a concern or question regarding the academic record. 
  • If the GPA calculation by the Graduate School does not correspond to the applicant’s idea of equivalency, the applicant is welcome to have the academic record evaluated by a third party evaluator.
