About

As a student in the MSW program, you can:

  • Increase your knowledge of social problems and their solutions.
  • Learn to improve social conditions for those in Alabama and throughout the U.S.
  • Develop the skills to promote social justice and human dignity for all people.

UA offers two options for earning your MSW: the Advanced-Standing Program and the 60-credit-hour program.

The Advanced-Standing Program is a 42-credit-hour program for only those who hold a CSWE-accredited BSW. It can be completed in three semesters when pursued full-time. Coursework is offered primarily online with face-to-face skills labs held on selected Saturdays at regionally convenient locations across Alabama.

The 60-credit-hour program is for those who do not currently hold a CSWE-accredited BSW. It is also available primarily online with face-to-face skills labs held at regionally convenient locations on selected Saturdays across the state of Alabama. It can be completed in two years when pursued full-time.

Both options offer two concentrations: Children, Adolescents and their Families or Adults and their Families.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Applicant data sheet and statement of purpose
  • One transcript for each U.S. or international institution of higher education
  • Admissions test scores less than five years old 
  • The application fee is $65 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and $80 for international applicants
  • Three letters of recommendation. 
  • Additional application materials (e.g., portfolios, writing samples, responses to essay questions, etc.) required by individual departments
  • International applicants must submit one certified copy in the native language along with certified precise word-for-word English translations of all transcripts, diplomas, and certificates of degree.
