Overview

This advanced English Education program at Columbia University is a flexible degree allowing students to select, in consultation with a faculty advisor, an array of courses that facilitate their intellectual and professional goals. The 60 points are designed for students to explore their interests widely through in and out of department electives, and intensely through English Education specific literature and research courses. The culminating research paper entails work that results in an original synthesis of a broad reading of theory and research. The Ed.M often acts as a precursor to the Ed.D or Ph.D programs.

Experiences and Exposures:

World-class faculty come together with a collaborative group of students from around the world to critically engage with theoretical and pedagogical stances that underpin English Education.
Coursework prioritizes bridging the theory-practice gap to help students understand critical issues in the field, and consider what reflective educators might do in response to them.
Students will explore their own individual inquiries and conduct original research into issues of critical importance to the field of English Education.
