Overview
Key Features
Upon successful fulfillment of RIC’s approved proficiency pathway, educators receive a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to apply for a Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement to be added to their teaching certificate at no cost by RIDE. In addition, educators may apply for admissions to the M.Ed. in Reading program at RIC upon conclusion of the coursework which also serves as the initial three courses in the Master’s program (these 12 credits will be applied towards the 36 credits needed for the M.Ed. for individuals granted admissions to that program). Other options also exist for consideration for advanced study such as the M.Ed. in Exceptional Learning Needs.
The Reading and Dyslexia Endorsement program at Rhode Island College works to address the statewide need to show dyslexia proficiency as called for in the 2019 Right to Read Act as well as provides in-service teachers with theoretical and pedagogical development to support students with reading difficulties. The program will offer the coursework needed for Reading Specialist/Consultant certification, a RIDE approved literacy/dyslexia endorsement pathway, and a M.Ed in Reading. We see this as essential work in ensuring that professionals have the tools to diagnose and treat struggling readers. They will understand the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, recognize and gain proficiency with the use of high-quality instructional intervention materials, and demonstrate skill in Data-Based Decision Making (DBDM).
