Overview

As a student in the library science graduate program, you can specialize your professional preparation work in academic library, public library or school library concentrations. If you are a service-oriented, intellectually and technically curious person, you will find a great benefit as a student in the Library Science, MLS program. With an MLS degree, you can be a librarian, a library administrator, an information specialist, a subject/special interest researcher, or one of many other library specialties in the field.

The school library media coordinator concentration leads to the North Carolina licensure and is recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The public library concentration leads to the North Carolina Public Library Certification. The accreditation by American Library Association (ALA) supports needed credentials for public and academic librarians in the United States.

ECU Advantage

The MLS program at East Carolina University was granted full initial ALA accreditation in February 2015. The program offers a school library focused set of courses that meets the requirements of the North Carolina Public Library certification and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for licensure as a school library media coordinator. The public library set of courses meets the requirements for public library certification in North Carolina. The academic library set of courses prepares students to work in college and university libraries in the United States. The MLS program is nationally recognized by the American Association of School Librarians of the American Library Association (NCATE-ALA/AASL). The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
