About the programme

Recipients of the M.M. in music theory from Louisiana State University have gone on to some of the most highly rated doctoral programs in the country, including the Eastman School of Music, the University of Washington, Florida State University, and the University of Wisconsin.

The Music Theory Program at the Louisiana State University School of Music offers rigorous programs in both undergraduate and graduate study of music theory. Our faculty is comprised of leading scholars in the fields of twentieth-century music and American music, music and mathematics, Soviet/Russian music and music theory, perception/cognition, and corpus studies.

Our graduate programs (M.M. and Ph.D.) offer intensive studies in areas that include analysis and performance, set theory, transformational theory, corpus studies, and music cognition. Graduate assistantships are available on a highly competitive basis.

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a foreign institution.

A grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 (A = 4.0) on all undergraduate work (or in the final 64 credit hours) and any graduate work already completed.

Acceptable GRE or GMAT scores.

A copy of the name page of your passport.

A completed Affidavit of Support and supporting financial documents (required to process forms for F-1 and J-1 visas). Note: Your application will be processed even if your financial documents are not included.
