The Genetic Counseling Master's Program (GCMP) at Rutgers University is a 22-month graduate program for students wishing to pursue a career in the growing and exciting field of genetic counseling.


Our training involves rigorous coursework, a variety of clinical rotations offered throughout the state, and a Master's research project. Housed within the Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Program, our Genetic Counseling program provides students with resources from the School of Graduate Studies, as well as the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Our dedicated academic and clinical faculty are experienced genetic professionals, representing a variety of specialties. Our students have the opportunity to work with a vast network of talented genetic counselors across the state of New Jersey working in a great variety of professional settings.


Graduates of the Rutgers University GCMP will:

  • Be able to conduct genetic counseling sessions for a variety of indications, demonstrating their acquisition of skills and Practice-Based Competencies
  • Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in all aspects of genetic counseling and be able to apply their knowledge in a clinical setting and beyond
  • Incorporate a variety of counseling skills into their practice and foster a model of patient-centered counseling
  • Appreciate the variety of genetic counseling career opportunities and understand how they can apply their skills to the profession’s ever-changing landscape
  • Have created meaningful professional connections lasting for a lifetime

  • Apply a principle-based framework for approaching ethical situations as they pertain to genetics and genetic counseling

General requirements

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited undergraduate institution is required. 

Undergraduate course prerequisites include successful completion (one semester) of each:

  • Genetics
  • Statistics
  • Biochemistry

Admitted students will be required to take an online embryology course prior to program start date if course was not taken previously.

Highly recommended:

  • Job shadowing or other genetic counseling experiences that familiarize an applicant with the genetic counseling profession is highly recommended.
  • Counseling experience is strongly encouraged. Some examples include volunteering with individuals experiencing crisis, various hotline work, working with individuals with disabilities, and working with support groups.
  • A GPA of 3.2 or higher is recommended
