Overview

The graduate program in Exercise, Sport and Movement Sciences from the University of Memphis is a 36-hour program with four six-hour capstone options: 1) applied project, 2) research lab residency, 3) thesis and 4) non-research. The program provides a research-centered program if you're interested in pursuing advanced graduate study (PhD) in exercise science (e.g., exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, etc.) or a related discipline (e.g., nutrition science, vascular biology, bioenergetics).

The ESMS master's program provides a comprehensive overview of the exercise science field if you are not interested in pursuing PhD studies, but would like to obtain further knowledge and skills necessary to work or serve in a clinical, physical activity or research setting. It also provides a strong focus on research methods and statistics relevant to exercise science, promoting research understanding regardless of your career goal (12 of the 36 required credit hours).

Depending on your chosen path, you will gain experience in many aspects of animal and/or human subject research. This may include recruitment and screening of subjects, equipment operation, phlebotomy and blood processing, animal handling and surgery, biochemical analyses, biomechanical analyses, data collection and analysis, grant and manuscript preparation, and oral and written presentation of research findings.

General requirements

Apply to both the Graduate School and the School of Health Studies. In both cases, the applicant must submit an official transcript for undergraduate and graduate studies. Additionally, an official report of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores must be submitted.
Submit the following to the School: 1) SHS Graduate Admission Application Form, 2) two letters of recommendation, and 3) a 300-500 word statement of goals including identification of the intended area of concentration. (Contact the school’s academic services coordinator for application forms. School of Health Studies application forms are also available on-line at www.memphis.edu/shs/students/grad_admission.php.
A minimum baccalaureate GPA of 2.75.
Completion of an appropriate undergraduate major and a strong background in discipline-specific courses: anatomy and physiology, health sciences, exercise physiology, anatomic kinesiology, biomechanics, and motor learning.
