What you will study

The rich history of music is a vital part of study at the Scheidt School. The Musicology MM program offered at University of Memphis is for the most advanced students. Our focus is mostly historical, with a strong element of early-music performance and an active Collegium Musicum exploring early and under-served repertories, but courses in world music and local traditions are also offered. All courses in the area are open to all music majors, and students in the music history and musicology programs may participate in applied lessons and ensembles upon audition.

General requirements

To be admitted, students must complete an application for the University of Memphis at-large, a SECOND application to the School of Music, and an audition.

Compose and upload a personal essay outlining your musical background and your interest in music history: Essays must be typed with a word count between 750–1000 words; Put your name, date, and essay title at the top of your essay.

Copies of all undergraduate (and graduate, if any) transcripts.

Word Education Services (WES) transcript evaluation report or equivalent (report from WES iGPA calculator is acceptable).

GRE General Score (recommended).

At least three letters of recommendations.

Personal statement.

CV (showing previous research experience, if any).
