About the Program

The Classical Studies program of the Case Western Reserve University meets or exceeds current requirements for high school teachers’ levels of employment. In addition, we are confident that our Graduates will be well prepared to move on to the PhD level. Many students who earn an MA in Classics also go on to have successful legal, medical or business careers.

The program will also stress making ethical use of sources and material artefacts, and proper citations and permission to publish. There’s a broad selection of courses split up by era (Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Republican, Imperial, and Medieval) and genre (Epic, Tragedy, Comedy, History, Satire, Elegaic). In addition we have material culture courses in Art History, Archaeology and Epigraphy.

Thesis and presentation

15 credit hours (5 courses) of any combination of Greek or Latin

6 credit hours (2 courses) of Classics courses

15 credit hours (5 courses) of any combination of Greek and Latin courses, one of which must be Medieval Latin

6 credit hours (2 courses) on any subject in Medieval Studies
