About the Program

Integrated Design and Management is offered by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Our curriculum combines the inspired, intuitive methods taught in the world’s best design schools, with the systematic, analytical instruction of the world’s best engineering and business schools.

The makeup of IDM’s student and faculty is intentionally composed of equal parts engineering, business, and design. Through the interaction of these diverse perspectives, students learn to appreciate and incorporate the value of other disciplines in their work. This balanced, integrated approach has produced, time and again, powerful new business paradigms, groundbreaking products, and the creative courage to solve complex, hard-to-define problems.

IDM’s core curriculum is taught in the Integrated Design Lab (ID Lab), a studio environment where interdisciplinary teams share state-of-the-art tools and a collaborative, fail-fast philosophy in which trial and error is encouraged, failure is celebrated, and the potential for success is realized.

At the heart of the program is the human-centered design process. Adapted from the world of consumer product innovation, our students are taught to look at problems through the eyes of their stakeholders — to connect design with the needs of the people who will ultimately judge and use the product. The process is driven by empathy. It’s backed by rigorous testing, structure, and discipline. It is process-heavy and people-oriented, and it works.
