The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) at Lincoln University requires students who plan to serve as K-12 school counselors to hold certificate to teach and complete an approved program in School Counseling. 

Overview

Candidates who choose to become K-12 school counselors but do not hold a teaching certificate must complete a sequence of courses in which they demonstrate knowledge and skills to plan, implement and evaluate classroom guidance lessons. 

Key Features 

  • The State of Missouri requires all candidates for certification as a Professional School Counselor to earn a passing score on the Missouri Content Area Assessment for Counselors. 
  • School Counseling students must complete the Application for the State of Missouri Counseling Certificate and submit it with all the required documents to Lincoln University's Certification Officer.

  • A non-refundable $30 application fee. 
  • An official transcript from every colleges and university previously attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or supervisors. For recent graduates, at least two of the three letters of recommendation must come from instructors of their major courses.
  • A personal goal statement. 
  • The results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Aptitude Test or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) for Master of Arts or Master of Education programs.
  • The results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Aptitude Test for the Master of Education or Master of Science programs.
  • The results of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) for the Master of Business Administration program.
