Overview
Students of the Education program of Mount Saint Mary College work in schools in our community as part of the education process. Many of our education courses are taught at local schools, a practice that provides “hands-on” experience for students to apply teaching techniques and to hone tutoring skills for local students.
The Mount offers the Master of Science in Education in the following programs:
- Childhood Education
- Adolescence Education
- Special Education
- Literacy Programs
- Middle Grade Extensions
Program Learning Outcomes
- Developing a sensitivity to the diverse needs of today’s student population;
- Developing an awareness of current educational research and ways to engage in action research within the role of reflective practitioner;
- Developing deeper insight and knowledge in such areas as standards-based education, special education, character education, technology education and literacy;
- Developing professional skills and competencies needed to maximize the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process in today’s schools;
- Developing skills in communication and interpersonal relationships within the school community;
- Developing an appreciation for lifelong learning and on-going professional development.

General requirements
- Complete the online graduate program application
- Submit official transcripts for all undergraduate coursework
- Three letters of recommendation
- The application fee is $45
- Students applying for our education programs will need to submit an on-site writing sample
- All applicants must come to campus for an entrance interview
- Education students will need to furnish a copy of their NY State Certification, if applicable
- For the graduate education program, applicants must have a final Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale with a 3.0 GPA in area of specialization
- MSEd. students who are applying for a program leading to an initial NYS Teacher Certification program have to take the GRE
- Students interested in our graduate education program should speak with the Office of Graduate and Adult Degree Completion Programs or a graduate program coordinator for information about program pre-requisites and state certification requirements
