The Education program of Southwest Minnesota State University offers the Master of Science (MS) with a major in education and emphasis in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership; Reading; English; Mathematics and Sports Leadership.


The mission of the Education program of Southwest Minnesota State University is to create communities of practice where each learner is an active participant in the investigation of learning, teaching, and leadership processes. Teachers and learners will engage in educational theory, research, inquiry, critical reflection, and application.

The Master of Science in Education program is offered:

  • Online for the English, Reading and Mathematics emphases
  • Through a blended option (on-campus & online) for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership; and Sports Leadership, and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) emphases.
  • Online options are available for those that are not able to make it on-campus for all of the above emphases.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

  • $30 (Non-Refundable) Application Fee
  • An official transcript from an accredited college or university stating a Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) has been completed.  If you attended a Minnesota State College or University, SMSU should be able to view your transcript without you having to request one to be sent. 
  • International students are required to submit their official transcripts and diploma to SMSU.  The documents must be certified true copies or notorized photocopies.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement of qualifications and career objectives (one or two pages; double spaced)
  • Immunization Form
  •  A copy of your teaching license is required for the Special Education, Reading, and TESL programs
