Overview

The Software Engineering program of the University of Minnesota is appropriate for software engineering professionals who want to increase their potential and relevance in the marketplace.

Our students come from a wide variety of organizations where classroom learning can be immediately applied to their jobs. Our graduates leave with enhanced critical thinking, leadership and interpersonal skills, giving them the tools they need to successfully manage and lead software projects. Our alumni gain a valuable network of industry professionals, communities of practice and peers to connect with throughout their careers.

Curriculum

Created by faculty from the Computer Science and Engineering Department and by industry experts, the MSSE curriculum delivers a powerful blend of software engineering theory and practice. Expect program content that is consistently cutting-edge, rigorous, and relevant. Topics include requirements engineering, project management, quality assurance, and database management systems.
The curriculum is fixed for the first three semesters. The fourth semester offers electives, including an optional independent project. A total of 30 semester credits and satisfactory performance on an independent project project is required for graduation.

Applicants should be currently employed and must have at least one year of full-time professional work experience in software development

B.S. or B.A. degree in computer science or related field (mathematics, electrical engineering). Students with degrees in fields not closely related to computer science may qualify with substantial relevant work experience

Preferred undergraduate GPA of 3.0

Two (2) letters of recommendation

A personal statement that outlines your experience in the field, your career goals, and discusses why you are interested in pursuing the MSSE degree at the University of Minnesota
