The Industrial and Systems Engineering program of the University of Minnesota offers three distinct degree tracks to fit differing student needs and interests. Each track offers an exciting curriculum that positions students for career advancement in a wide variety of industries.


Program Options

The Analytics track of the Industrial and Systems Engineering program of the University of Minnesota emphasizes fundamentals in the areas of optimization, statistics, computing, data analysis, and communication. Students in the Analytics track learn how to use data to generate practical business insights and make decisions.

The Industrial Engineering track emphasizes a broad portfolio of skills for students interested in careers in industrial engineering and related fields. Core courses cover production and inventory control, stochastic and deterministic methods in operations research, and human factors.

Aimed at working engineers, the Systems Engineering track focuses on elements of systems engineering practice. Students in this track learn interdisciplinary approaches in the context of an integrated, design-oriented framework. 

The dual M.S. program in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Civil Engineering (Transportation Engineering Focus) at University of Minnesota provides in-depth training in methodologies from Industrial and System Engineering — such as mathematical optimization, stochastic modeling, and queueing theory — that are employed in transportation engineering. Students in the dual program also gain experience applying these methods to transportation engineering problems and develop domain knowledge of transportation engineering applications.

Analytics Track

  • Engineering-level calculus
  • Undergraduate probability and statistics
  • Proficiency in computer programming
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • English language test scores

Industrial Engineering Track

  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale is the preferred standard for admission.
  • English language test scores

Systems Engineering Track

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or in a closely related discipline
  • Applicants with non-engineering majors must have completed (or show proficiency in) coursework in mathematics and statistics
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • At least two years of professional work experience in a technical field
  • English language test scores

Dual M.S. Program in ISyE and Civil Engineering

  • Prospective students must submit separate applications to the Civil Engineering program and to one of the three MS in ISyE tracks. A student must be admitted into both MS programs to be enrolled in the Dual program.
