At K-12 Literacy Specialist from Saginaw Valley State University all of our courses integrate theory with real-world application, allowing you to deepen your understanding of research and best practices, while simultaneously implementing these practices in your classroom and school. Student Learning Outcomes

The Literacy Specialist program is designed for elementary or middle/secondary candidates who have initial certification and want to become more effective teachers of literacy in their own classrooms or who aspire to a position as a Literacy/Reading Specialist. To be certified as a K-12 Literacy Specialist in Michigan a candidate must complete a master’s degree in a state-approved preparation program and successfully pass the MTTC (Michigan Test for Teacher Certification) for Reading Specialists. SVSU’s program is state-approved.

Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts from any college or university where college credit was earned (original signed/stamped transcripts)

A copy of most recent teaching certificate or departmental approval. If you need to obtain a copy of your (current or expired) teaching certificate to submit with your application, you may retrieve a copy though the Michigan Department of Education Certification site.

A current résumé

A one-page statement of accomplishments and academic goals

Two letters of professional reference

Evidence of financial support (original signed/stamped bank statement)

A demonstrated knowledge of personal computer usage and application. Knowledge of programming is desirable, but not a requirement for admission. Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate competence in English.
