Everything you need to know about studying a master's in Literacy Education

part of Education & Training

Literacy Education teaches you how to develop and improve people’s reading and writing skills, regardless of their age. This discipline has a strong social impact, as you will learn how to help people understand the world they live in and give them the tools to contribute and make it better.

During a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Literacy Education, you can expect to take classes on early literacy development, language development, writing instruction, reading difficulties, content area literacy, literacy assessment, etc.

You will explore various methodologies and tools that can help people communicate effectively, make sense of the world, and be more involved in society.

Over 700 million people worldwide are illiterate, according to UNESCO, and Literacy Education can help fix this, but this discipline is much more than teaching people to read and write.

As a future literacy educator, you will create lesson plans and activities that mainly focus on reading and writing abilities. However, speaking and listening skills are just as important and need to be part of the curriculum. You’ll also need to pay extra attention to students who struggle to keep up the pace, or to students that suffer from a learning disability, such as dyslexia.

In addition to solid pedagogic knowledge, literacy educators also master communication, organisation, creativity, and evaluation skills, among others.

After graduating with a Literacy Education degree, you can work for public and private schools, community organisations, NGOs, etc. Other related job titles include reading teacher, adult education teacher, special education teacher, community literacy specialist, etc.
