Overview
The Special Education programme at Oakland University provides a robust academic framework for educators and professionals seeking to master the complexities of human development and child studies. This Master of Education degree integrates theoretical research with practical application to support diverse populations with exceptional learning needs.
Students can choose from several distinct concentrations, including Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Emotional Impairment (EI), and Specific Learning Disability (SLD). These pathways allow for deep specialisation while maintaining a focus on broader concepts of instruction and assessment.
The curriculum is designed to meet the rigorous standards of the Michigan Department of Education, often leading to specific teaching endorsements.
Why Special Education at Oakland University?
The institution offers a mission-driven environment that prepares ethical and analytically rigorous behaviour analysts and educators. Students benefit from a curriculum that aligns with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requirements, ensuring high professional standards.
Distinctive features include the integration of evidence-based practices and the opportunity to work within specialised facilities like the ABA Clinic and the Lowry Centre. The programme emphasises data-based decision-making to improve outcomes for individuals with a wide range of behavioural support needs.
Partnerships with local educational sites facilitate the required supervised field experiences, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world environments. This practical focus ensures that graduates are ready to design and evaluate effective interventions for various disability categories.
