The College of Education and Human Services offers a Master of Arts in Literacy Education, formerly known as Reading, online. This professional graduate program leads to pre-K through adult reading specialist certification in West Virginia.


 Those seeking the master’s degree will take 30 credit hours and those who have a master’s degree and only need certification take 24 credit hours. Coursework will focus on preparing specialized reading professionals in the three areas identified by the International Literacy Association. Graduates of this program may attach Reading Specialist certification to their current teaching area by passing the PRAXIS Series test.


The Literacy Education/Reading Specialist certification specialty licensure area has been approved by the West Virginia Board of Education and is nationally recognized by the International Literacy Association (ILA) and Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP).

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
