Visual arts and art history play a central role in our increasingly visual and interactive culture. Without the barriers of language, the visual arts are able to foster the kind of cross-cultural understanding required of global citizens.

About

Founded in 1913, the Department of Art and Art History is committed to researching, teaching and practicing conceptual creativity and creative problem solving in media which encompass equally the most contemporary technologies and the most ancient forms of artistic practice. We are dedicated to the understanding and analysis of visual communication, to complex critical thinking and writing, and to the interpretation of local and global culture, past and present. Our BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), offer students the opportunity to study with award-winning faculty in a "best-in-the-West" combination of facilities for making, exhibiting, and researching art across many media. All programs are supported and enriched by a diverse schedule of exhibitions in the Natalie and James Thompson Gallery, eight student galleries, and weekly public lectures.
