Overview

The Art - Art History and Visual Culture MA program from San José State University prepares students for a graduate library degree with specialization in art history, as well training for a variety of positions including community college professor, researcher, museum curator, arts administrator, conservator, and visual resources librarian.

Our program is especially strong in modern and contemporary art, architecture and design, and the art of the Renaissance. We also feature a variety of special-topic courses such as Art and Architecture of Islam, History of Photography, German Art, and “Fashionology.”

Graduates with Art, Concentration in Art History and Visual Culture from San José State University will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge (visual recognition and identification) of significant artworks and of the canon of historical periods customary in Western and Non-Western traditions.

Demonstrate increasing skills of visual analysis appropriate to describing and explaining artworks from a variety of historical contexts.

Demonstrate the writing and research skills necessary for the accurate and complete investigation and communication of art historical information.

Demonstrate a theoretical, historiographic, and professional understanding of the discipline of Art History and apply this understanding to explaining and solving research problems.
